Jackie in Taiwan: Deaflympics Countdown Ceremony

September 6, 2008

Jackie joined Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, Taiwanese actress Brigitte Lin, several dignitaries, and over a thousand students at the Taipei Town Hall in Taiwan to mark the one year countdown to the Deaflympics. Taipei is the first city in Asia to host the Deaflympics games, marking a milestone for the hosting of international sporting events in Taiwan.  The Deaflympics events are geared for athletes whose deafness require special rules in sporting events.

Jackie shared his own story of an accident in Yugoslavia which left him with decreased hearing in one ear. He encouraged everyone to keep trying their best and never to give up in order to succeed.

Jackie and the others sang the 2009 Deaflympics theme song "Power in Me" and then together they activated the 365 day countdown clock.

Four thousand athletes from over 80 countries are scheduled to compete in the 2009 Taipei Deaflympics next summer.
